Session 5 – Kelly O’Rear – 3-27-10

You can look at the symbols on a sun dial, but unless the sun shines, you won’t know how the day goes. In the same way, you can read the Word of God, but unless the Holy Spirit shines upon it, you only see words on a page.

We never retire from the gospel and move on. We must preach it to ourselves every day.

Three things that pull us away from the gospel –

1. Condemnation – more focused on our sin than God’s grace
2. Legalism – when we base our relationship with God on our own performance. Attempting to achieve acceptance with God and forgiveness from God through obedience to God.
3. Subjectivism – basing our view of God on our changing feelings and emotions.

We tend to make decisions and evaluate reality based on momentary emotions. We let our feelings tell us what is true instead of letting the truth transform our feelings. Our feelings and emotions are conditioned by a sinful nature and a warped culture.

Don’t equate walking by your feeling with being sensitive to the Holy Spirit.

We try to locate our faith in an emotional state instead of in clear objective truth.

We invest feelings (or the lack of) with final authority rather than the Word of God.

Don’t confuse worship with emotion. Truth fuels worship. Not “feeling” a song doesn’t mean you don’t sing it (even when you’re distanced from God). You sing it because it is a proclamation of truth, and God is glorified through that.

Psalm 42:1-6, 8-11

It is so important to be memorizing scripture and anchoring ourselves in the truth!

Broadstreet Film Festival 2010

  

Last weekend was our annual Broadstreet Film Festival.  It started off as a Bryan College event a few years go, and now it has expanded to include five regional schools.  I helped with two of the films nominated for awards this year.  "Animals" was a short film I helped with last Fall, and this semester my field production class made a documentary on the fire that destroyed Bryan's administration building 10 years ago.  The documentary didn't win an award, but "Animals" took home four!!!  That was really exciting!
